In essence Achebe could be suggesting that just as Okeke wants to control who Nnaemeka marries likewise the women who live in the village are also being controlled by the men in the village.

Florencia Paredes rated it did not like it Jul 16, The Sitting Bee, 16 Nov. This excellent short story by Chinua Achebe concerns the return of a young Ibo man named Nnaemeka from Lagos in Nigeria to the countryside where he was born and grew up.
In the opening conversation between the two characters, Nnaemeka expresses his concern about notifying his father about their upcoming marriage. Outside marriage is a private affair by chinua achebe in 3rd omniscient Setting: Equally stubborn, Okeke refuses to accept the wedding picture that his son sends him, cutting Nene out of it as a symbol of the way that he cannot accept his marrige.
